1000 Heroz

June 27th, 2011

Looking for great value for money ? Are you slightly obsessed with leaderboards ? RedLynx has you covered, all for the low, low price of one dollar.

1000 Heroz present you with 1000 levels of platforming fun with one catch. From the day it was released, they are only making one new level available a day, which means it will stay fresh for the next 3 years. The premise is simple, you need to run from left to right, over obstacles, to reach the finish line in record time. Although the leaderboards are only open for the run of the day,you can still go back and replay previous runs to get gold stars.

Building on their Trials HD experience, RedLynx has managed to deliver a polished iOS game with impressive physics. Momentum is key as you run down slopes and jump over rocks placed to break your speed. Every split second counts and the players on the top of the leaderboards are separated by 1/100th of a second.

Each run has par times for one,two or three stars. If the three star run seems impossible, luckily you are rewarded for beating the two star time with a relic. The detailed prizes are hand drawn and unique to each level, along with a unique character for each level.

Controls are minimal, with left (which you will rarely use) right and jump buttons, making 1000 Heroz another great example of “Easy to play, hard to master”.

The runs are also divided into themes, or ages, with the ancient age series running currently. Looking at the menus there are a lot to look forward to over the next 3 years, as the runs progresses through human history to the age of motoring.

Sega Rally Online Arcade

May 31st, 2011

Did you spend hours and a lot of coins in shopping mall arcades behind the steering wheel of Sega Rally ? Do you miss those days ? Then Sega Rally Online Arcade is for you ! Plus it’s available on the South African marketplace, bonus !

Duplicating the arcade felling accurately is a double-edged sword. On the one side it is great in short bursts and doesn’t take the racing too seriously. The cars slide around the course in an over the top fashion and there is not a lot of difference in the cars available.

On the other hand, Darren, the game does not have a lot of content to offer. Most of the racing is done on 5 tracks with a handful of cars. This does not offer hours of progression and unlocking for the obsessive gamer but there is enough challenge for most.

Starting off you get a basic choice of rally cars and there are a couple of  cars to unlock that does offer some variation, but the game doesn’t give the player any hints on how to go about it. It is a major oversight as you just have no idea what is required to get access to the locked vehicles. The internet is your friend though and even then there are some speculation on some of the unlocks.

The tracks cover a nice variety of scenery, from a jungle to snow, cramming all the rally variations in a very tight package. The roads are very forgiving as there are ample space to power slide around the corners, which you will be doing a lot. The physics is all out arcade and a lot of fun if you like racing but don’t want the serious simulation or worry about damaging your car. Just step on the accelerator and try to win the race.

Reminiscent of the arcades all races use checkpoints that need to be reached, with the clock counting down. Designed to make you pump more coins into the machine in the arcades, it doesn’t really affect gameplay but is a nice reminder of the game’s roots.

Single player mode provides you with a couple of different approaches to racing. The main race has you start in 22nd place. You have 4 races to reach first place, granting you access to a one-on-one race on a special lakeside track. There is also straight up single race against 5 other cars and ghost races to take on developers or friends times. Lastly there are classic races where you take control of rally cars from days gone by.

Online is where the game comes to life, as with most games. Racing against the AI can quickly become boring, add in some human opponents and it’s a different beast altogether. Online takes place in standard 6 player races, with AI filling spots if there is not enough players, so each race is always full. There are a lot of really good people out there already so prepare to fight hard if you want to get anywhere near the podium.

Sega Rally Online Arcade pays perfect homage the old days of hanging out in shopping malls and provides a great action packed racing game for 800MSP, just don’t take it too serious.

WordPress for iPhone

May 12th, 2011

I decided the best way to review WordPress for the iPhone is to use it to publish the review. So here we go.

First things first: adding this self hosted blog was a breeze and there is a setup for blogs hosted at wordpress.com

20110512-224032.jpg
Adding a new post, comment or page straight forward, as is editing and deleting.

Editing a post can be rough, as full tags are displayed for images and other non text elements. I also experienced a crash when attempting to resize an image.

The main layout contain shortcuts to your posts, comments and pages. Only the basics that you need for day to day management on the go is provided but Unfortunately the WordPress app doesn’t offer much else. There is no plugin administration or anything fancy, I couldnt even rotate a picture.

WordPress for iphone seems to be made for quickly checking up on your blog and put an idea in draft, to be finalized on pc.

The app still has a long way to go with a lot of functionality still missing but if you are competent at typing on the iphone you will find a lot of use when on the road. It is free so there is no excuse not to try it out if you have a blog
